LET'S SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM!

On the 23rd of February 2014, 11 Leos and one probationer from the Leo Club of SMK Assunta visited two orphanage homes and gave out ice-creams to the children. This ice-cream project was organized by Leo Jahan along with the help from Leo Samantha Ong. Two mothers offered help as transport for this project. We gathered at the school at 12.40pm and left for the first home, Praise Emmanuel at 12.55pm.

The journey to Praise Emmanuel from our school took only 10 minutes. We were greeted warmly by the friendly embrace of the children. Some of them remembereda few of the Leos who visited their home in another project before. We donatedseveral stacks of books and bags of clothes to the home. The children were a friendly bunch as they came towards all of us, shaking our hands politely and exchanging information about each other such as names, ages and interests.

The second home we visited is Rumah Ozanam, a boy-girl separated community, so for this project, the boys gathered at the girl’s home instead considering of the bigger surrounding the girl’s home had. This home had a larger number of children of all ages. The girls were really pleasant and sweet, as for the boys, they were rather polite and active. Books were also donated to the home.

Soon afterwards, the group photo was taken outside at the lawn and it was finally time to go home. The Leos had a lot of fun, playing and interacting with the children. We made such great connections with a lot of them and they were really going to be missed. We arrived back at school at 3.45pm. We hung about until our transport arrived. It was an amazing experience and we couldn’t wait for another project similar to this.

CHINESE NEW YEAR VISIT

On 25th January 2014, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta had organised a project to visit Trinity Community Centre in conjunction to Chinese New Year. Around 12 Leos along with our teacher advisor, Puan Suguna, attended this project. It was a very short visit as the children in the home had to go out for a trip.

When we reached the centre at around 2.30p.m, we introduced ourselves to the children. Some of them already knew some of the Leos as we had visited them before. While waiting for some of the children to finish their lunch, we decided prepare the things we needed to make the Chinese New Year decorations.

We thought them to make different type of Chinese New Year decorations using ang paus such as fishes, mini lanterns and flowers. Some of the Leos also taught the children how to make colourful string knots. The children were very interested in making them. After, the decorations were made, they were stringed up and hung around the home. It was a very short but fun visit with the children, it was nice to see them having fun making the decorations and learning something new too.

These boards were hung up at four different locations, which were, by the lawn way, at the canteen, on the board by Bilik Jahitan 1 and another also at the lawn way.

The students were provided with a piece of chalk and were asked to write what Assunta really meant to them. We had a huge response from this project. We even had seniors who have already left the school calling us up and asking us to leave a message for them on behalf of them. All in all, it was a huge success. The school gave an overwhelming support to us.

On the 6th to 9th of January 2014, the Leo Club of Assunta has organised the Leo board revamping project. Approximately 10 Leos attended this project. The purpose of carrying out this project is to allow Leos to show their creativity and decorate the Leo board. As it was a schooling day, the project started after school ended.

The theme for the Leo board this year is Night Safari. One of the Leos went to buy the decorations while the others think of what to add on the Leo board. CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR GIFTS

On the 3rd of January 2014, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta gave out Famous Amosjelly pops to the teachers and the school staff as Christmas and New Year gifts. The gifts were prepared a week before school started.

We spent about 3 hours tying ribbons onto the jelly pops and sticking labels to them. With the help of a few Leos, the gifts were given out to the teachers and school staff quickly. They really liked how the jelly pops were decorated. The smiles on the teachers and school staffs’ faces when they received the gifts made us feel that our hard work was worth it.

SAVE OUR WATERFALL

On 21st December 2013, 7 Leos from the Leo Club of SMK Assunta participated in the regional project, Save Our Waterfalls, organised by Leo Eric Teh. Seven other clubs had also joined this regional project. We gathered at Monash University at 6.45am and left for Kanching at around 7.10am. The journey to Kanching waterfall was about one hour. When we reached the place, we saw a lot of monkeys there! We could see monkeys almost everywhere we went to. We gathered at a spot nearby to be briefed on what to do and were given T-shirts to wear during the project. First we were separated into 2 groups, then we shifted the plants that were in the black polyurethane bags to the spots where we were going to plant them.

After that, the two groups were separated to do two different activities. One group went to the waterfall to clean it up. This group went to the second, third and fourth level of the waterfall to clean it up. We could not go to the higher levels of the waterfall because it would be too high and dangerous for us. The other group followed a few instructors from Pertubuhan Pecinta Air Terjun Selangor to an area nearby the waterfall to find different species of insects we can find and are beneficial to the environment. They also learnt how to check if the waterfall was clean by checking it’s pH value.

Later, we had lunch at around 12.00pm. After lunch, some of us went to clean up the area nearby the waterfall by picking up the rubbish we could find. Some of us also planted the plants at the spots where we shifted them to. After that we took a group picture with the instructors from Pertubuhan Pencinta Air Terjun Selangor. We went to the waterfall again to have some fun after all our hard work. We left the place at around around 3.00pm. We had a lot a fun and met new friends during the project. It was a new and interesting experience for all of us.

LEO CHRISTMAS CHARITY BAZAAR

On the 13th to 15th of December, PJI Leo Club organized a Christmas Charity Bazaar which is a joint Christmas project of SMK Assunta, SMK Taman Petaling and SMK Taman Sea. The aim for this project is to give the orphans a memorable Christmas. The head of the project was Leo Samantha from PJI and Assistant Head Leo Melvin.

The three day bazaar was held at Tropicana City Mall (infront of Borders), 1 st floor. Leos started arriving at 8:30am to help set up the booth and blow balloons but the event officially started at 10am and ended at 10pm. We were divided to groups of seven consisting of Cashier, Gift wrapper , Stationary counter 1, Stationary counter 2, Clothes counter, Accessories counter and Runner.

The stationary counter displayed a variety of goods suitable for children and adults alike. We sold clothes from branded stores such as H&M, 21 and Pixie all for a reasonable price. Most interestingly, we had a Secret Santa service where people have the liberty to choose a card from the Christmas tree consisting of an orphans name, age and gender. They then have to buy a gift for that lucky orphan. The gift wrappers wrapped the presents and they were put under the tree. It was a really good experience being part of this project as we inculcated good values such as determination, responsibility and perseverance. Everyone did their very best to come for their shifts and help out as much as they could and some even stayed the whole day! We would definitely cherish that very moment as we got to make new friends and we brought joy to a lot of kids.

CHRISTMAS CAROLLING

On the 7th and 8th of December 2013, the Leo Club had organised the Christmas Caroling project. Leos from the Leo Club of Taman Petaling, Taman SEA and Petaling Jaya Integrity had also joined us in this project too. Around 20 Leos had attended this project. After having Christmas Caroling practices on the 4th, 5th and 6th December 2013, the Leos were all in the Christmas mood and ready to spread the joy to the homes we were going to visit!

On 7th December 2013, the Leos had gathered at SMK Assunta. We left the school to go to the first home at around 3.10pm. The first home we went to was an old folks home called White Dove Retirement Home. The elderly in the home were very excited when we came. We were told that we were the first group of people to come to this home for Christmas Caroling. We were glad to see them play the maracas while were singing, one of them even danced along too! After that, we went to a physical disorder home called Shal Home Care. There were a lot of people in the home! Some even sang along with the songs they were familiar with. After that, we left the home and reached SMK Assunta at around 5.30pm.

On 8th December 2013, the Leos who participated in this project gathered at SMK Assunta again and left for the homes at around 2.45pm. The first home we went to was Felicity Nursing Home. They also joined us while we were singing! Later, the home provided some refreshments for us while we spent some time with them. Then, we went to a children’s home called Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home. After singing the Christmas carols with the children, we played a few games with them. Leo Kenneth Ding, our Santa Claus then gave out gifts to the children!

We were really glad to have spent time with the people we met for the past two days of this project and put big smiles on their faces too! It feels great to spread the joy and Christmas joy to all the homes we visited. It was a great project and I hope that we will be able to meet them again soon!

INTERNATIONAL LEO DAY

International Leo Day was to be held on the 5th of December 2013 but due to inconvenience, the Leo Club of SMK Assunta had decided to carry out this project on the 4th of December 2013. The 4th of December also happened to coincide with the first day of our Christmas Caroling project practice. So, we decided to carry on with our practice and after that go to Taman Jaya to do our part as Leos.

During the practice, we were multitasking as we were packing biscuits, sticking labels onto the packets, sticking labels onto water bottles as well as practicing our singing for Christmas Caroling.

After that, we had asked Lion Ivan for permission to go toTaman Jaya and distribute the packets of biscuits to the people of the park.

Anyone and everyone who was there got a packet of biscuits and a bottle of water. We distributed the biscuits and water to everyone we saw including workers, gardeners, cleaning ladies, stall owners, children playing and families eating. It was a fantastic feeling to see the smile on their faces that show that they are so appreciative for what we did. That, to most people, is enough to brighten up their day.

All in all, it was a very productive day as we had two Taman SEA Leos helping us and we managed to finish off all the biscuits and water bottle.

I PLANTED A TREE

On 29 of November (Friday), The Leo club of SMK Assunta went to Bagan Lalang Beach, Sepang to carry out mangrove seeds planting project. Around 15 of Leos participated in this project. This project was held after the ‘Beach Clean Up’ project. After taking a rest, we were taught on how to plant the mangrove seeds.

One of the instructors, Miss Laila was taught us about the mangrove trees before planting them and we learnt a lot from her. After that, Miss Laila asked each of us to pluck a mangrove seed from the plant to plant it ourselves later on. Miss Puspa and Miss Sashi, other two instructors taught us the procedure of planting the mangrove seeds. All of us paid full attention while they were teaching and all of us gave a try after that. It was quite an easy task so we managed to plant the seeds we plucked very fast.

After all of us have planted the seeds we plucked, we then helped the instructors to plant more mangrove seeds. Even though we were under the hot sun while planting the mangrove trees, we did not give up. At last, we managed to plant around 100 mangrove seeds. We were so glad looking at the plants we have planted!
We hope to visit there again in three years’ time to look at the growth of the mangrove seeds we’ve planted. Before we left, we took a group photo with mangrove trees as memories.
